The Play with your Socks characters are created by craft author
and stylist, Kelli Ronci. A long time fan of the original sock
monkey and other 1940's sock toys, Kelli draws inspiration from
the vast array of colorful socks now available to put
her own twist on this classic craft.
Each unique sock character is hand "sculpted" and sewn from a
single pair of carefully chosen socks. Great care goes into giving
each character it’s own distinctive expression, from the initial
character design to the final placement of buttons for eyes.
In 2001, Kelli created her first sock dog, an orange and brown
dachshund, as a gift for a colleague. At the time she was a craft
editor for Martha Stewart Living magazine, and her creation
became the inspiration for an article entitled "Sock Toys Dogs".
Since then, Kelli's sock sculptures have taken on the shape of
cats, bunnies and now monkeys. They have appeared in other
editorials, and on the shelves of high-end retail shops.
In 2004, the international designer Paul Smith, approached her
to collaborate on a limited edition of sock dogs created with his
eclectic line of socks. The success of the first edition, sold
exclusively in the UK, led to several more editions, sold in NYC
and throughout Europe and Asia, and eventually led to an edition of children's t-shirts bearing Stripe the sock dachshund.
Kelli continues to play with her socks, expanding her cast of
characters, and is excited to make her latest
creations available here online. |
